We have all been led to believe that the name “bingo” evolved in the USA from a game called Beano. A certain toy manufacturer, Edwin S Lowe apparently saw the game of beano being played at a county fair. Took it home and one player got so excited that they stood up and shouted “Bingo” instead of beano and the name stuck, making the US responsible for the name “Bingo” claim to fame. So the story is told!

This is now being questioned by Historian Dr. Carolyn Down. Her research apparently exposes a wealth of information regarding the birth of the name “Bingo”. It also goes into how the game was played in the trenches during World War 1 and how it grew as both a political and social fundraising game through the 20th century. She also questions our belief that the game was first named bingo in the USA.

Her research suggests that the name bingo was already in use in the UK prior to the USA incident in 1929. The newly published article “A History of Bingo in The UK” uncovers a few surprises along the way. Not least of which is the claim to fame of the name, she believes that the name was being used in the UK concurrently with Edwin Lowe’s discovery. Apparently the matter does need further evidence, but perhaps, just perhaps we have been mislead into believing that the current history we have on the game is misplaced and should be revised.

This month Jackpotjoy will be celebrating its 6th birthday and the celebrations are under way. They are going to be hosting a week long birthday party and guess what? The members are going to be receiving the birthday gifts, not the online bingo site. Between the 14th and 20th June there are going to be massive giveaways on the Jackpotjoy website during this week long event.

The start of includes you just having to send in a photo of yourself and this will automatically qualify you to be entered into their ₤1 000 draw, this is a cash prize! Then all you have to do is spend ₤10 every day, on bingo, throughout the birthday celebration week and you can stand a chance of winning some really super prizes. These include Nintendo Wii’s, Plasma TV’s, Cameras, iPods, kitchen appliances (boring), vouchers and a great deal more. With the Jackpotjoy bingo birthday celebrations the fun just doesn’t stop.

The draws take place daily, and each day all bingo players who have deposited ₤10 will be entered and stand a chance to win any one of these marvelous prizes. One player will be drawn randomly and will win something. I think that is worth a ₤10 stake! If you aren’t a member already it might be a good idea to sign up pretty quickly.

An East Kirkby bingo club has been raising church fund for the maintenance of the village hall and St. Nicholas Church for more than twenty five years. Last year they raised more than ₤1 000 and they have been doing this every year going back for a quarter of a century. There is a dedicated team of volunteers who hosts a bingo night that attracts a great deal of support from the village. The bingo night is held every Tuesday at 7:30pm.
Val Lingard is the bingo night organizer and they have an organizing committee of ten other ladies. They work between themselves to organize fund raisin activities, but bingo is one of the most popular. Many of the people that attend the bingo fund raising evening have been coming to the weekly game since its inception twenty-five years ago. Their bingo books cost 25p and they play twelve games on the night, prizes include groceries and fresh meat. The money that is raised is used for the general maintenance of the village hall and recently the bingo club paid for a new kitchen and disabled toilet for the village hall.
