Pensioners at the St. Andrews Church Hall in Larkfield had the shock of their lives when a thief burst into their bingo game and ran off with the bag of money they had collected for good causes. More than thirty pensioners were playing bingo at the time and were left reeling by the shock attack. Many were afraid to go home in case the thief was still lurking outside.
Forty two year old Isobel Duffy organizes a twice-weekly game of bingo for pensioners at the Church Hall. She said that it is such a low thing for someone to steal from a Church Hall. The thief apparently stood around in the hall as though he were looking for someone, then he grabbed the bag of money and ran like the blazes. Mrs. Duffy and two of her friends ran after him but could not see him anywhere. She said he knew what he was doing as the street lights in Larkfield are out, and he knew that they would not be able to see him making his getaway.
The money collected from the bingo ticket sales was destined as a charitable contribution for the Inverclyde Autism Support Group, Ardgowan Hospice and Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Greenock police officer, Sergant Danny Godfrey said that it is despicable for anyone to take advantage of vulnerable people playing bingo, it looks as though this is a desperate act taken by a desperate person, and the police are anxious to apprehend the culprit.
